RELEASING FEAR
Anger and fear are usually related. As a therapist for many years, I discovered that when any situation is peeled down to its core, what is left is anger or fear. The most serious fears are of abandonment or death. Other fears include success, rejection, change, financial problems, failure, pain, dependency, sickness, looking stupid, and loss of love. One way to understand which fear is the most disconcerting for you is to make a list of all possible fears anyone could have. When you are finished listing them, take a moment and place a numerical value (from one to ten) next to each fear you identified in your life. This exercise can be quite revealing, as some fears may be disguised in dysfunctional behaviors.
Fear tends to be energetically stored in the knees, kidneys, legs, stomach, back, and throat.4 A very effective technique is to either write a letter to your fear(s) or to the particular organ or body part that houses it. The easiest way to begin the letter is to start writing without thinking and without an agenda. Do not lift your pen from the paper. Just journal everything and anything you are currently experiencing. Then dialogue with the fear and thank it for providing protection, of sorts, to you. If you are ready, invite it to leave.
As with anger, you may feel more comfortable drawing a picture of your fear or where you feel it lodged in your body. Draw it in vivid colors and shapes. You can also use visualization to remove the fear once you have decided that it no longer serves you. Just use your imagination to give it a color, a shape, and a texture. Notice where it is stored in your body. Then with focus and intention, mentally shrink it down in size until it completely disappears. Begin to pay attention to your dreams. Keep a dream journal and begin to get in touch with your fears as they are revealed in your subconscious mind through your dream state.
Eventually you will reach a point where situations no longer illicit anger or fear. The process will be like a metamorphosis rather than a sudden about-face. The situations you encounter are all manifested by you, and that recognition allows a person to step back and appreciate the opportunity to grow rather than becoming caught up in being a victim. This is difficult to appreciate at first; however, it is incredibly freeing because you accept responsibility and essentially take control over your life.
Be conscious of the situations you encounter and the emotions that arise. By noticing which emotions are being triggered, you are taking note of the areas that need additional work. When you reach the point where anger is no longer being triggered as it may have been in the past, accept this as confirmation that you graduated from that lesson. Feel good about your progress.
Still another method for releasing emotional blockages caused by fear is to change the program in your mind through the repetition of affirmations.
